Aim Higher

Basic Needs Drive 2011

From April 4, 2011 to April 20, 2011 the Wayne State University Athletics Department W Week Community Service Initiative, in partnership with Wayne Cares, the DO Foundation and Covenant House, hosted a drive to collect small toiletry items to make DO bags for the DO Foundation's "Hit the Street Mission" as well as for Covenant House. Eleven local Marriott Hotels donated more than 6,000 items to the drive and assisted in the bagging and distribution of the items as well.

The Mission of the DO Foundation is to connect directly with the homeless for a personal account of their immediate needs, and to generate community support in conjunction with implementing cost-effective programs to aid and assist them with meeting those needs.

Covenant House Michigan is a nonprofit organization that provides hope to homeless, runaway and at-risk youth ages 13-22. They provide shelter, educational and vocational programs, as well as other support services, to help overcome hurdles such as homelessness, unemployment, inadequate education, violence, drugs and gangs.

The drive collected over 20,000 items which created 820 large basic needs bags to give out to the community. Approximately 310 bags were donated to Covenant House and the remainders were handed out to individuals in Cass Park on Saturday, April 30. More than 45 WSU student athletes participated in the distribution effort in Cass Park.
